This episode is dedicated to two Flemish composers from the Renaissance: Jheronimus Vinders and Matthaeus Pipelare.
Jheronimus Vinders is known for one particular work: the motet O mors inevitabilis, lamenting the death of Josquin Desprez. Very little is known about his life and career. He was the singing-master at the guild of the Sint-Bavo’s cathedral in Gent in 1525-1526. He has a small oeuvre, consisting of four Masses, eight motets and three secular songs. His Missa Fors seulement is based on two chansons –from Antoine Févin and Matthaeus Pipelare – with the same title, but differing in lyrics. The Salve Regina super Ghy syt die wertste boven al is based on a song from Johannes Ghiselin.
The final work in this programme is another Salve Regina, composed by the previously mentioned Pipelare, who worked in Antwerp and ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
