Nuove Musiche

This hour features two special CDs with early music.

This programme introduces two recently released CDs with music from around the 1700s, composed in South Germany and in Austria. They are the latest CDs from Le Miroir de Musique (conducted by Baptiste Romain) and the Marini Consort Innsbruck (conducted by Bernd Oliver Fröhlich).

The first CD is dedicated to Anthonius Gosswin’s music. He was born in Liège and entered the court of Albrecht V in München as a young singer, under capellmeister Orlandus Lassus. When Albrecht died in 1579, part of the musical entourage, among them Gosswin, was fired for financial reasons. He found work with one of Albrecht’s sons, Ernest, and dedicated a volume of German songs to him.

The second CD takes us to the court of archduke Maximilian III of Austria, situated in Graz, and later in Innsbruck. Around 1594, Paul Sartorius was made organist in his chapel. Sartorius came from Neurenberg, where he had studied with Leonhard Lechner. He had met composer Palestrina during a stay in Italy.

The oeuvre of Sarotius consists of Masses, motets, spiritual madrigals and German songs. His sacred works most often are polychoral. The CD includes some works by Johann Stadlmayr, who became capellmeister at the court in 1607.
