The history of twentieth century opera. 1989B
1989: the year in which the Eastern bloc disintegrates and the Berlin Wall falls apart. Looking at this year, we will spend some additional time on two operas by Russian composer Dmitry Smirnov. We will also revert to ‘Light’ the series of operas Karlheinz Stockhausen worked on from 1977 until 2003. There is also room for ‘Charlotte Corday’ another little gem which will take us back to the period of the French Revolution. Looking at all these works makes us realise that our longing to overcome evil with good is of all times, especially in times of historical breakthroughs of which 1989 stands as a good example.
