Egypt: Female voices from a Golden age

This episode of Orient Express is dedicated to some female voices from the “Golden Period” in Egypt: The years 1930s to the early 1970s. A period of prosperity in the music and film industry. With the Egyptian capital Cairo as its center: the Hollywood of the east.
Some of these featured singers were overshadowed by the big star Umm Kalsoum. They did make the – still unforgettable – daily Top hits of those years.

Young Leila Mourad asking who would buy the roses from her. From  “Leila”  (a 1942 film inspired by “The Lady of the Camellias”).
