Live concert of Zoviet France & Evan Parker. Recorded in Conway Hall, London, March 8, 1996.
Zoviet France is a music group from Newcastle upon Tyne in northeast England. In the beginning, their music was often of a dissonant and industrial nature. Later on this changed more into the direction of ambient. In 1980 the group was founded and nowadays consists of co-founder Ben Ponton and Mark Warren. Former members included Neil Ramshaw, Peter Jensen, Robin Storey (nowadays Rapoon), Lisa Hale, Paolo Di Paolo, Mark Spybey (nowadays Dead Voices On Air) and Andy Eardley. The record sleeves of Zoviet France were often made by hand of materials like jute, tar, wood and aluminium foil.
Evan Parker (1944) is an English free improvisation saxophone player from the European free jazz scene. He worked with Derek Bailey, Han Bennink, Paul Bley, Anthony Braxton, Peter Brötzmann, Gavin Bryars, Alvin Curran, Globe Unity Orchestra, Steve Lacy, Roscoe Mitchell, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Cecil Taylor, etc. etc.
Initially he was inspired by Paul Desmond but he became especially well-known as a follower of the American avant-garde; John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Albert Ayler and others. His music in the sixties and seventies was harsh, raw and alarming. More form than melody. He developed a technique at which he could cross false and harmonic notes over one another to make a tight and compact sound wall as such. He was also interested in electronics. He started to work together with people like Phil Wachsmann, Walter Prati, Joel Ryan, Lawrence Casserley or Matthew Wright who arranged his sound electronically.
