Special rond The Los Angeles Free Music Society.
The Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS) is sinds het begin van de jaren 70 een collectief van experimentele musici uit Los Angeles. Sleutelfiguren van het collectief zijn Joe Potts, Tom Recchion, Joseph Hammer, John Duncan, Dennis Duck, Juan Gomez, Kevin Laffey, Chip Chapman, Fredrik Nilsen, Jerry Bishop, Ace Farren Ford, Ju Suk Reet Meate en Rick Potts. De belangrijkste bands zijn Le Forte Four, Smegma, Solid Eye, Airway, Monique Experience, Foundation Boo, Extended Organ en The Doo-Dooettes. Ze lieten zich beïnvloeden door onder andere John Cage, The Residents, Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart en free jazz. Zelf hebben ze in Californië dan weer andere bands beïnvloed zoals Caroliner Rainbow, Sun City Girls en The Thinking Fellers Union Local 282. Ook hebben ze Japanse noise-bands als Hanatarash, Hijokaidan en Incapacitants beïnvloed. Die invloed bestaat uit een zeer speelse benadering van muziek maken, die voortkwam uit het feit dat ze de bestaande rockmuziek te saai, voorspelbaar en glad vonden. Ze gingen meer improviserend te werk dan de standaard rockbands, experimenteerden meer en hanteerde een ‘do it yourself’ methodiek.
