Episode V, two conservatoires.
Thea Derks followed the music tracks of Reinbert de Leeuw in her biography ‘Reinbert de Leeuw: mens of melodie’ (man or melody), released in 2014. The pianist, composer and director was (and is) of great importance to Dutch music.
In 1962 De Leeuw finished his music theory studies at the Amsterdam Conservatoire and started to study music composition in the renowned ‘Monday morning class’ of Kees van Baaren at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. There he became friend with Louis Andriessen, Mischa Mengelberg, Peter Schat and Jan van Vlijmen.
In the meanwhile he continued to study the piano at the Amsterdam Conservatoire. There he often coached the violin students of his colleague Oscar Back and performed with violin players Channa Salomonson and Jeannelotte Hertzberger. He lives with Hennie de Swaan at the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam, where he spent a lot of time with oboist Han de Vries.
