Panorama de Leeuw XXXV: Tanglewood 2.
Thea Derksen traces the musical footsteps of Reinbert de Leeuw, inspired by her biography Reinbert de Leeuw, mens of melodie.
From 1994 to 1998 De Leeuw is the director of the contemporary music department at the famous summer academy in Tanglewood. De Leeuw changes the accent from academic, so called ‘uptown’ music, to more accesible ‘downtown’ music. We have already considered this in epsiode 34.
He passionately stands up for the work of befriended composers such as Sofia Gubaidulina, who he invites to be composer in residence in 1997. A year later he even invites two composers to come to Massuchusets: Mauricio Kagel and Henri Dutilleux.
This results in memorable concerts and a minor collision with Japanese-American conductor Seiji Ozawa, head of Tanglewood.
