Duke Ellington – Daybreak Express
Ellington’s version of a commuters train ride in the early morning. in 1953 Daybreak Express (1934) was used by filmmaker Donn Alan Pennebaker as the soundtrack for his metro short film.
Philippe Sarde – Le Train (soundtrack)
A movie about a love affair between two war refugees in a train across Vichy-France.
Francesco Giannico – Metrophony
For an art installation Francesco Giannico recorded the sounds of the Roman metro. Samples were later mixed with violin, guitar, piano, synthesizers and effects. The final version of Metrophony is 40 minutes long.
David Chatton Barker – Twelve Stations
30 seconds long audio recordings of 12 British railway stations mixed with recordings of The City Of Exeter Railway Brass Band. The final results were released by the Folklore Tapes label.
Wil Malone – Death Line (soundtrack)
Death Line (also known as Raw Meat) is a 1973 horror movie about cannibals in a London metro tunnel.
Michel Magne – Compartiment Tueurs (soundtrack)
Compartiment Tueurs is a 1965 movie about a murder on a night train. This French movie was directed by Costa-Gravas.
Aaron Copland – Subway Jam
Railway Jam is the third part of Copland’s Music For A Great City (1964) and musically describes the hectic New York metro.
Kraftwerk – Trans Europa Express
Trans Europa Express (1977) is Kraftwerk’s tribute to this European express train. The connecting part Metall auf Metall ends in a collision of metal sounds.
Spaceheads – Angel Passing
A rhythmic track filled with audio recordings from Victoria Station, Manchester and Angel Station in London.
Public Service Broadcasting – Night Mail
Benjamin Britten’s – Night Mail soundtrack gets an update by hauntology popband Public Service Broadcasting. Night Mail (1936) is a short documentary about mail delivery by night train.
Donald Fraser – Locomotion (Mordant Music remix)
Mordant Music remixed Donald Fraser’s Locomotion. Locomotion (1975, Geoffrey Jones) is a 15 minute long experimental documentary about railway innovations.
