BBC Radiophonic Workshop.
That the BBC Radiophonic Workshop has/had a reputation to uphold as hotbed for early experimental electronic music may be taken for granted. In 2008, 50 years after its foundation and 10 years after its shut down, Mute Records took the trouble to re-release some two classical Radiophonic Workshop records. Next to that, we also present for the first time a well-earned retrospective of 40 years Radiophonic Workshop.
In this hour of PopArt you can listen to work by Workshop employees like Delia Derbyshire, John Baker, Dick Mills, David Cain and Paddy Kingsland. All names that are almost given mythical proportions because they were associated with the wonderful time at the BBC. For many Brits, this is probably pure nostalgia; for everyone else it’s straight electronic music history.
