Portret van de Amsterdamse klankontwerper en componist Ivo Bol.
‘About my music: I am a composer of electronic and electro-acoustic music, a sound artist and a performer. In the past ten years I have created my own way of making music and art with sound, using various software programs and hardware controllers. I am interested in music and sound that is rich and detailed, that feels intuitive and organic, not binary or digital. My compositions resemble sound archeology: I collect many details and samples from my own field recordings and old records, from which I create new work. I do not work as a DJ or remixer, but I place details that intrigue me in a new context in an alchemistic creative process.’

7. Ivo Bol – Gasometer Universe (radio edit) (2007)
Live performance 22 September 2007, Gasometer Oberhausen.
“The Gasometer Universe” is the title of my winning composition for the MONO competition organised by the German Association for Electroacoustic Music in 2007. Algorithmic composition techniques and live performance came together in this piece that is inspired by ideas about the origin of the universe. The Gasometer is a 117 meters high Gas-factory from the 1920thies in Oberhausen, in the heart of the Ruhr area in Germany. I performed the piece for the first time on 15 & 22 September 2007 at the Gasometer Oberhausen, Germany. http://www.ivobol.nl/blog/?p=211
The piece started with a “Sonic Big Bang”, a conglomerate of all the sounds I used later in the piece, condensed as if it was a singularity exploding. After this I slowly unraveled this “knot” of sounds, repeating different versions of it while taking out sounds and making the pauses between the different sounds longer, playing them gradually at a lower volume, as matter expanding in the void to form a universe of sound. Slowly the different sounds became recognisable. Throughout the piece there was a long development from extreme density to a very minimal presence, and from a very high volume to a very low volume. I arrived at a point where I wanted the audience to become aware of the lowest possible volume of sound where it is still possible to hear it, like the faint signals that we detect from galaxies millions of light-years away. Playing sounds at a very low volume in this space is something I was particularly interested in because of the reverb/echo character of the Gasometer, and the amazing sensibility that our hearing has. The sounds I used were mostly short, to play with the contrast short sound – long echo. I looked for a great diversity in sounds to have the ability to explore different atmospheres, they are the atoms that formed the Gasometer Universe.
8. Ivo Bol – Synthese (2010), composition for ensemble, turntable en LiSa performed by Ivo Bol and ensemble Brooommm, 16 October 2010, Korzo5HOOG Den Haag. In this new piece for electronics, turntable and LiSa software from STEIM, the musicians trigger and improvise with small electronic sound events, merging and combining everything in a new synthesised sound world. The electronic music events are based upon samples from soul records from the seventies, this time not used in a hiphop context but to create a dreamy alchemy with the instrumentalists of ensemble Brooommm.
Frank Wienk, turntable. Nina Helvert, Soprano Saxophone. Jan WiIlem Troost, Cello. Teodora Stepancic, Spinet. Ivo Bol, Electronics / LiSa.
As a performer I use live sampling and improvisation, and I have developed live instruments that use physical gestures. My aim is to develop instruments that allow me to make music in an intuitive and flexible way, like any acoustic instrument. For that reason I have been involved with the STEIM foundation (studio for electro-instrumental music) in Amsterdam, which is dedicated to developing intuitive and tactile electronic performance art technologies. As composer and performer I love to work with other artists; I have collaborated with many artists, dancers, choreographers and filmmakers on dance performances, theatre, documentaries and installations. I believe in mutual artistic exchange that challenges and enriches myself and my work.
