In bijna chronologische volgorde komen tracks van de albums uit deze periode langs onder het motto: “We made it because we really like this kind of music (just a bunch of old men with rock & roll clothes on sitting around in the studio, mumbling about the good old days). Ten years from now you’ll be sitting around with your friends someplace doing the same thing if there’s anything left to sit on.” En dat allemaal volgens Zappa’s eigen visie: ‘AAAFNRAA – Anything Anytime Anywhere For No Reason At All’

Zappa noemde al zijn composities één groot werk dat onderling uitgewisseld en aan elkaar geplakt kon worden. Dat (modern-) klassiek, rock ’n roll, blues, doo-wop, jazz en ‘random sounds’ allemaal in dat plan pasten was zijn fikse signatuur; immers een Zappa-compositie herken je uit duizenden. Niet voor niets wordt hij vaak als referentie genoemd bij de wat complexere muziekstukken.
Voor sommige liefhebbers is de beginperiode hét hoogtepunt in Zappa’s œvre, voor anderen valt hier nog heel wat te ontdekken.
