Musical Romanticism, explored by Pieter de Oude.
Another fine hour of chamber music with Radio Romantica. We begin with the long and impressive piano quintet from Edward Elgar. This work, written in 1919, is a particularly rich, late-Romantic composition, in which every aspect of composing for this fantastic combination of instruments and orchestrating them is fully developed, fulfilling their potential.
The second string quartet from Smetana is the work of a troubled mind. The composer was insecure and physically unwell, while writing the piece in 1883. He died from a nervous breakdown in 1884.
Programme:
- Edward Elgar – Piano quintet, op. 84
Ian Brown, piano / Sorrel Quartet
- Bedrich Smetana –String quartet no. 2 in D minor
