Symphonie no. 6 by Anton Bruckner.
Today’s Radio Romantica hour is filled with Anton Bruckner’s great Symphony no. 6. He composed the work in 1881, but never got to hear it played live by a good orchestra like the Vienna Philharmonic, who only played it after his death. By then it was 1899, and it happened mainly because of the perseverance of conductor Gustav Mahler, who thought highly of his modest and insecure colleague. As a young man, Mahler, like Hugo Wolf, was fascinated by the symphonic scores composed by the little organist from Linz. The public and, to name but one, Johannes Brahms didn’t think much of it at all, and apparently took pleasure in snubbing the wonderful music.
The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and its conductors have also consistently championed Bruckner’s symphonies. Symphony no. 6 is conducted by Riccardo Chailly, the recording dates from 1997.
