Songs by Richard Strauss.
Today’s Radio Romantica hour is filled with beautiful songs by Richard Strauss. He was a specialist in this area. In addition to his extensive operas, he composed intimate scenes for vocals and piano. The accompanist must have a thorough command of his imstrument, as the scores are demanding. The singer must be able to alternate between the atmosphere of a simple children’s song or a vocally demanding opera scene.
Strauss adored the soprano voice. His big opera roles tend to always be women and he really manages to make the female voice sound optimal, both on the opera stage and informally. Anne Schwanewilms (picture) convincingly demonstrates this, and she is accompanied by master accompanist Richard Vignoles.
