Senyawa & Black to Comm.
Hamburg-based noise artist Marc Richter (who records as Black To Comm) pulls apart and reconstructs ‘Alkisah’, the 2021 album from Indonesian duo Senyawa. ‘Alkisah Versi Hitam’ is a complete reinvention of a superb original, recasting it as a collage of cut-up vocals, drone, percussion and freeform noise.

Asmus Tietchens & Miki Yui.
Mutual spirits, Tietchens and Yui have long operated in pursuit of a lower case, spectral muse, and now at the behest of TAL’s Stefan Schneider they present a beautifully insoluble sound that transcends the sum of their parts. Incredibly delicate, and full of nanoscopic movement, the seven tracks unfurl between passages of burbling pastoralism and oneiric drowse.

Will Guthrie & James Rushford.
Drummer Will Guthrie and keyboardist James Rushford join forces here for a spontaneous studio session that took place in Nantes, where Guthrie is currently situated. With Rushford wielding a detuned pipe organ and Guthrie complimenting his wheezing dissonant drones with gongs, bells and cymbals, it doesn’t take more than a minute or so to fully materialize in the Aussie duo’s (real real) world.

Anne Guthrie.
“Gyropedie,” Anne Guthrie’s third record for Students of Decay, takes us further into their hermetic practice, wherein expertly captured field recordings, French horn, and electronics are woven into potent and richly imagined electroacoustic environments.

Alessandra Novaga.
Alessandra Novaga is among the leading figures within Italy’s thriving new, experimental, and improvised music scene, consistently rendering striking solo efforts, as well as equally noteworthy collaborating with Stefano Pilia, Paula Matthusen, Elliott Sharp, Sandro Mussida, Travis Just, and others. Remarkably ambitious and forward thinking, her approach to the guitar veers from the trajectories of visceral emotiveness and textural extended techniques that have held sway over the instruments applications within avant-garde contexts over the last half century, encountering her relentlessly deconstructing and rethinking its unique properties through applications of structure, resonance, space, and tone.

Pierre Henry.
Pierre Henry was a French composer, considered a pioneer of the musique concrète genre of electronic music.
After completing traditional studies at the Academy of Paris, with Olivier Messiaen (harmony) and Nadia Boulanger (composition), Pierre made in 1949 a decisive meeting with Pierre Schaeffer, with whom he foundered the GRMC (Groupe de recherche de musique concrète) dedicated to the experimentation in “concrete music”. In collaboration with Schaeffer, he wrote Symphonie pour un homme seul (1950) and the “concrete” opera Orphée (1951) (revised as Orphée 53 (1953)), which has the astonishing sequence Le Voile d’Orphée”, where already one finds the technique of audio time stretching, a characteristic of his style and the presence of death: a subject that inspired him.

Maths Balance Volumes.
It makes less sense to say that Maths Balance Volumes formed in 2002 than to say that, since that year, they have been collapsing into something, again and again. Just as the three members fell together with no plan or allegiance to any style or genre, each track falls together as the broken pieces of songs and sounds meet to make a temporary and frightening whole. Things make their way into a Maths Balance Volumes song when they don’t or won’t work anymore, when they have escaped their owner, or hidden away where nobody is supposed to find them. When things fall together—when the wooden creaks and radio hisses gather for a minute alongside bass lines and melancholy voice—there is a beauty that sounds like it was made by nobody and for nobody.

Aaron Dilloway & Lucrecia Dalt.
‘Lucy & Aaron’ feels unique and special; there’s a general mood that evokes the essence of the “new weird America” movement of the mid-00s, but piped into a contemporary mold that defies easy categorisation. It’s highly satisfying to hear two singular artists sharing an appreciation for each other’s work while managing to transform that appreciation into art that celebrates not only their similarities, but also their differences.

Just before lockdown in 2020 Richards and Shaw finished a tour, Points of Failure, which involved building performance-installations in various venues across the UK. Alvin Curran.
Alvin Curran belongs to a long line of pianist composers who speak through their instrument as philosopher, poet, dancer, comedian, lover. His passion for the piano is visceral. As an interpreter I can read a composer’s personality through their music; Alvin’s psyche is one that that I never tire of. He has the gift of transcending humanity while remaining firmly embedded in it, of communicating vast architectural horizons while meditating on a single leaf. We became friends through a profound, shared experience.
