Therein, he follows a natural instinct for playful narrative and continues to nurture a passion for field recordings and unusual instruments.

Beatriz Ferreyra.
Beatriz Ferreyra is one of only a few female concrète composers who were active across the second half of the 20th century through to today. Her work, which is still very much an active investigation, is simultaneously complex and elegantly simple. Often drawing upon singular object of focus, Ferreyra’s use of tape and other forms of manipulation radically reconfigure her chosen sound materials, opening them outward.

Ben Bondy.
Ben Bondy makes ambient music shot through with sharp, pristinely mixed drums. This album for Huerco S.’s label is psychedelic in a way that suggests a faint sense of nausea or discomfort.

Jean-Luc Guionnet.
After more than three decades with the alto, heavyweight French artist and multi-instrumentalist Jean-Luc Guionnet arrives with his debut solo saxophone recording, a double-LP masterpiece, “l’épaisseur de l’air” (the thickness of air). Recorded in a barn in Brittany, the album merges texture, repetition, gesturality and architectural acoustics to create a definitive statement on the profound physical relationship between improviser and instrument. A student of Xenakis’ at the Sorbonne, Guionnet imbues the language of the saxophone with a sensual richness rife with a devastating sense of bliss.

Nuova Superficie.
Nuova Superficie is a duo of Giovanni Lami & Enrico Malatesta. Horizontal actions in progress, a slowly change and a melt all over the course of the performance, this is the ground idea in the duo.Sound originates from several speakers placed in the space in an eterogenous way, and – in general – from different diffusion points, amplified or not, analog or acoustic, in a non-referential movement.

Kusunoki Shigeo.
Emerging during the early stages of the recording industry in Japan, the ryūkōka style adopted western classical, blues & jazz elements into traditional and classical Japanese music.
This collection of 1920s & 30s ryūkōka recordings follows on from the Kouta Katsutaro tape we put out a couple of years back, and further captures the hauntingly unique sound of a cultural merging that was starting to reflect itself via popular song, ahead of the widespread influence of western pop music during post-war US occupation.

Francesco Cavaliere & Tomoko Sauvage.
Francesco Cavaliere and Tomoko Sauvage embody a tactile audio visual display, radiating the color green into sounds and painting meditative music. By transforming collected objects into invented instruments and scenography, each motif becomes a dedication to a specific situation, an anecdote or a symbol, sometimes real and other times absurd, that the artists have encountered through their travels and conversations: the Chinese myth about a man wearing a green hat, naming convention of Japanese traffic lights, or even the imaginary chants of frolicking twin dolphins. This inspired the duo’s personal research on experimenting with raw and synthesized idiophones, stage landscape design, spontaneous field recording and organized improvisation.

Papillon.
Papillon is the project of Discrepant head honcho, Gonçalo F Cardoso (with guest appearances by Cédric Stevens and Kink Gong, Mike Cooper and Yannick Dauby). Taking inspiration from the 1969 French adventure book of the same name, Papillon explores the sonic interzones between dream and nightmare. Through the use of augmented field recordings, Papillon uses the ‘exotic’ jungle as the starting point to develop a dense and evocative sound where ethnic recordings, impromptu synth jams, modular synthesis and foley art effects come together to create a quasi-mystical crackpot mix of esoteric visions, near death experiences, shamanism, fever deliriums and lucid dreaming.
