Een nieuwe lente, een nieuw geluid

Vogels voeren in dit programma de boventoon als pleitbezorgers van Sounds Right, een Britse beweging die de natuur als rechtspersoon beschouwt: “A new initiative will see nature recgonised as an official artist on major streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music”. Zo ging onlangs in Londen de serie Earth Unwrapped van start om via muziek hiervoor aandacht te vragen. “The greatest musician of all time has never been credited for her work. Via the Sounds Right initiative, at least 50% of recording royalties from tracks by global artists that feature NATURE will be donated to biodiversity conservation and restoration projects along with 63% of recording royalties from ambient NATURE tracks” aldus de website https://www.soundsright.earth

Koekoek, winterkoning & roodborst

Naast Brian Eno is folkartiest/ eco-activist Sam Lee het boegbeeld. Niet alleen zingt hij tijdens zijn vogelexcursies samen met nachtegalen, ook mixed hij vogelgeluiden in zijn songs zoals Bushes & Briars & Birds bewijst. Lee komt uitgebreid aan het woord in het Songlines magazine van deze maand https://www.songlines.co.uk De Noorse joik-zangeres Mari Boine vraagt aandacht voor de bedreigde natuur van haar Sami-volk. In Gula Gula zingt ze: “Hear the voices of the foremothers. They ask you why the earth becomes polluted, poisoned and exhausted. They remind you where you come from. That the earth is our mother. If we take her life we die with her”. Aansluitend bezingen The Brothers Gillespie in vlijmscherpe duetten de onuitputtelijke natuur van Northumberland. Gevolgd door Britse folksongs over de koekoek (Pentangle), de winterkoning (Steeleye Span) en het roodborstje (Emma Christian).

Visarend

Harpiste Catrin Finch & koraspeler Seckou Keita brengen op hun album Soar (zweven) een ode aan de visarend (ospray), die jaarlijks van West-Afrika naar Wales vliegt om er te broeden. Migratie, zowel fysiek als emotioneel, vormt het thema van deze cd waarop Welshe harp en West-Afrikaanse kora versmelten.

Tropische vogels

De Congolese zanger Lokua Kanza laat zich inspireren door pygmeegezangen die traditioneel de zoektocht naar voedsel begeleiden. Kanza wekt met betoverende vocalen een gonzend tropisch bos tot leven; afgewisseld met de oorspronkelijke gezangen van de Baka bevolking uit Kameroen.

Merel & veldleeuwerik

Zouden The Beatles en Pink Floyd na zoveel jaren alsnog de rechten afdragen voor het samplen van een merel (Blackbird) en veldleeuwerik (Grantchester Meadows)?

In Ierse ballads verwees de merel niet alleen naar de liefde, maar bezat ook een politieke lading.

“The Wee Weaver, in the north of Ireland is in fact one of the large family of Blackbird tunes, descended from the old Jacobite song air The Royal Blackbird in which the Catholic James II, defeated at the battle of the Boyne and taking refuge in France, was personified as a blackbird flown far from its home and its absence lamented”.

Nachtegaal

Ook zonder zang of sample komen vogels tot leven. Zo componeerde Mozart met Ein musikalischer Spass (KV 522) een ode aan de spreeuw die hij in een kooitje hield. En maestro Tata Mirando imiteert op viool hoe rijk de nachtegaal kan kwinkeleren.
