Liquid Time Part 2
In this nightly programme of the Concertzender we will listen to music that transforms the space of time. Sometimes the listener experiences a total standstill of time and sometimes it seems like time is flowing like honey. The Night is a good moment for us to change our notion of time.We will listen to traditional music from China and Kazakhstan.
Bodhisatva plays the guqin, Northern Wei Dynasty (386–534).
In the first half of the night we will listen to the guqin, a Chinese citer with over 3000 years of history. Confucius was a master on the Guqin and it was his favourite musical instrument. In the previous episode we listened to the first 4 CDs, from the "Anthology of the Chinese traditional folk music" released in 2007 edited by Wang Di. On the next 4 CDs of this beautiful 8-part collection are composed pieces for the qugin of different schools from the last 1500 years of history of this special instrument.
Qobyz player.
In the second half of the night you will hear music played on the qobyz, or the khyl-qobyz, a cello like viol from Kazakhstan. It is made of a piece of wood and an open sound box and looks like a giant spoon. A mirror is placed in the sound box and on the neck of the instrument metal objects are hung, together with feathers of an owl. The strings are made from horse hair. The player doesn’t push the strings to the neck like with a regular cello, but his fingers only touch the strings with variable strenght. This is how a richness in tones is produced and then the instrument produces a sound that resembles a human voice. In Kazakhstan people believe that this instrument possesses magic and healing powers. With the help op the qubyz the player can travel between the worlds of people, spirits and spheres. We will listen to recordings from the series “Eternal Melody”, a collection archive-recordings from the Kazakh traditional instruments released in Kazakhstan at the request of the ministry of Culture.
