Successful American jazz and light music of the 20th century, composed primarily from Broadway musicals, musical theater and Hollywood films. The compositions of Harold Arlen.
Hyman Arluck was born in Buffalo in 1905 and inherited his love and talent for music from his father Samuel, who was the cantor of the local synagogue and also led the choir in which young Hyman sang. Soon after he started taking piano lessons at the age of 9, he played better than his teacher, and before he was 16, he played and sang in bars and vaudeville shows! In the late 1920s, he moved to New York City, changed his name to Harold Arlen, and began his career as a composer. In the first half of the 1930s, he wrote mainly for Cotton Club shows with lyric writer Ted Koehler.
