Music by 20th-century composers
Spectral music from the 20th century
Today: spectral music at the end of the 20th century. This musical genre began in the 1970s and is still developing, partly because of innovations in computer music. Spectral music explores the nature of musical tones (or timbre) and the overtones, and the nature of the harmonic spectrum that determines how we experience sound.
