Wandering through the Palace of Nostalgia. In today’s episode, the story behind ‘I’ll never smile again’, the singer Zjef Vanuytsel (this time singing the poetic song about the Night) and also the Flemish Willem Vermandere who sings a heartbreaking song about what remains after the war: ‘Duizend Soldaten’ (Or Thousand Soldiers)
We have several piano players: Erroll Garner, Oscar Peterson, and the singing piano player Nellie Lutcher (she played for Pia Beck and Nina Simone).
Furthermore, we have John Marshall with Rob Agerbeek’s trio, Louis Davids in London, Bernard Herrmann with music from a Hitchcock movie.
And finally, we have singer Dick Haymes, plodding in a studio, singing the same song over and over again.
