Works from Maurice Kagel, Peter Michael Hamel and Aribert Reimann
Kagel’s Fourth String Quartet from 1993 is a continuation from the Third. Again, the composer plays with our listening routines, plays with what we think we recognize. Many times, we are sent on the wrong path.
Peter Michael Hamel also looked for ways to disengage himself from the old traditions of the string quartet. In his Third String Quartet he uses his experiences from a South Korean monastery. You can hear the result in each of the three parts: hyang-ak (traditional music), mu-ak (shamanistic music) and a-ak (ritual music imported from China).
The Bagatelles from Aribert Reimann are a post-modern response to the bagatelles from Schoenberg and Webern’s time. These ultra short works were originally meant as accompaniment to a romantic cycle of Lieder from Kirchner.
