Evert Jan Nagtegaal about Barbara Strozzi
Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677)
Composer and singer ‘la Virtuosissima Cantatrice’
Barbara Strozzi was fortunate to be born into a world of creativity, intellectual cultivation and artistic freedom. She made an impression as a composer and singer and eventually published eight collections of songs – more music in print during her life than even the most famous composers of her time – without the support of the church or the patronage of an aristocratic house. Sometimes she is credited with the creation of an entire musical genre, the cantata. Her works were included in important collections of songs that found their way to the rest of Europe and England. Still, in 1677, she passed away in oblivion in Padua, with little wealth or possessions. Listen to her music in this episode of ‘’.
