Wandering around Jewish music

sun 15 dec 2024 17:00 hrs

Wandering around Jewish music. A program put together by Cobie Ivens with Jewish/American humor from Mickey Kats & Spike Jones.

1-
Mickey Katz.
On his first Capitol LP, Mickey Katz, born in Cleveland in 1909, is called a “world-famous dialect comedian who has audiences reeling in the aisles with his hilarious parodies and mischievous gestures.” A veteran of the Spike Jones troupe — as a top dialectician, Mickey Katz is a master of song parody. If you love humor and great music, and who shouldn’t, Mickey Katz is the king.

2- Spike Jones.
The music of Spike Jones fits in seamlessly with Mickey Katz, whom we heard before. Spike Jones founded his own band in 1940 under the name Spike Jones & his City Slickers. With this band, which became famous very quickly, he had several hits. During live performances, Spike Jones conducted his orchestra with a pistol in his hand, which was also occasionally used for sound effects. The instrumentation with cowbells, car horns, a toilet seat covered with gut and similar sound-producing objects were typical for the musical basis of Spike Jones’ creations.
