World Minerals

fri 17 jul 2009 18:00 hrs

This World Minerals is dedicated to music that the American record label ‘Sublime Frequencies’ has releases, and most of all to Group Doueh from the Western Sahara and Omar Souleyman from Syria.

The Sahrawi are the original inhabitants of the Western Sahara, who together with Polasario fight for the independence of their country. After the Spaniards had withdrawn from their last colonies in 1975, Morocco and Mauritania occupied the area, which lead to the flea of the Sahrawi to the inland of the Sahara where they live in refugee camps in South Algeria. Group Doueh is from the Western Sahara and plays pure Sahrawi music, that echoes the difficulties of the life in refugee camps, sufferings of war and the longing for independence.
Omar Souleyman
Omar Souleyman is a Syrian musical legend who, together with his musicians, released as much as five hundred studio and live recordings on cassette which you can find in every city of Syria. Arab mawal singing, Syrian Dabke – regional folk dancing music – and Iraqi Choubi can all be found in their music.
Bombino
In this World Minerals you will also hear Group Bombino, that is lead by the charismatic Oumara AlMoctar – ne’ Bombino. Together with Group Inerane they form the sound of the Toeareg guitar revolution in Agadez, that spread over the Sahara in the eighties and nineties. The Toeareg used their music in Lybian refugee camps as a political weapon by spreading cassettes under the Toeareg community with messages for preservation of their way of life with autonomy, dignity and respect. As of 2007, when Sublime Frequencies released the LP ‘Group Bombino: Guitars from Agadez vol. 2’, the Kel-Tamashek, as they call themselves, started rebelling again against the government of Niger. Bombino’s popularity is starting to take on a mythical status.
