Impressions of a unique piece of English pop history from the 1968 to 1975 period. We zoom in to the Canterbury Scene, a collection of musicians and groups that we can count among the progressive direction within English pop, who all have their roots in the city of Canterbury, or in the immediate vicinity of this town in southeast England.
Characteristic of these bands is their experimental impulses. Accompanied by a good dose of psychedelica, rock music is combined with jazz improvisation, and playful British humour is never far away.
Programme creator Pieter de Rooij dove into his record collection and, for this episode of World Minerals, produced a mind-expanding musical trip to Canterbury on the LP works of Soft Machine, Gong, Matching Mole, Hatfield and the North, Egg, Robert Wyatt and Kevin Ayers.
