Three flavours on the menu: Surinamese kaseko Jazz, a mix of Western classical and Persian classical, and instrumental North Indian raga music.
I Music by the Surinamese-Dutch flutist, composer and ethnomusicologist Ronald Snijders, born in 1951. He has already had a very long music career and has over 60 albums to his name. In 2022, he was awarded the Boy Edgar Prize, the most prestigious Jazz prize in the Netherlands. In 2024, his latest album Penta was released, an album full of catchy kaseko Jazz of which we will play 5 pieces.
II In 2024, the German-Iranian group Joolaee Trio released their album Morgenwind. The trio consists of Misagh Joolaee on the Iranian string instrument called a kamanche, Schaghajegh Nosrati on piano and Sebastian Flaig on Iranian percussion. Morgenwind, the debut album of the Joolaee Trio, was recently awarded the prestigious Preis der Deutschen Schallplatten Kritik in the traditional ethnic music category.
III Raga music on the sarod, the fretless Indian lute, played by American Ken Zuckerman. Reason to play one of his recordings is the sad news of his passing away in February 2025, at the age of 72 in his hometown Basel in Switzerland. Zuckerman was a world-renowned performer of North Indian raga on the fretless lute. He achieved his advanced level of playing under the guidance of his world-famous guru, sarod player Ali Akbar Khan (1922-2009).
We will play a live recording from 2022. Zuckerman plays the morning raga Sindhi Bhairavi. On tabla, he is accompanied by Swapan Chaudhuri.
