The clarinet player Edmond Hall, originally from New Orleans, in the end predominantly became a representative of the swing era. This stands out very clearly in his quartet recordings with pianist Teddy Wilson, and the pieces with a sextet that were captured on the small label “Continental”.

LESTER YOUNG MEETS NAT KING COLE After he left Count Basie’s band, Lester Young worked with a group of his own, of which his brother Lee was also part as a drummer. During his stay on the West Coast, he joined pianist Nat King Cole under the small Aladdin label and they became a quartet. They recorded relatively long pieces.

The Lionel Hampton Small Combos ( Finale ). This programme’s recordings are a selection from what was produced during a number of studio sessions in 1940. The strengths became smaller and smaller and Hampton himself was often the main, and sometimes even the only, soloist. The end of his association with the Victor label came with a final day of recording in April 1941.

The groups changed a lot which shows a sampling of the most prominent soloists from that period. This time, a broad choice from the production in 1939.

Vibraphone player Lionel Hampton was born over 100 years ago (20 April 1908) and died in 2002. Lionel Hampton Groups – part 1. Possibly inspired by record company Brunswick’s success with records of small pickup groups led by pianist Teddy Wilson, Victor decided to take on a similar project with vibraphone player Lionel Hampton as the centre of it all. Between 1937 and 1941 they recorded about ninety pieces, a selection of which can be heard in this programme.

Coleman Hawkins 1944. Because of the so-called “record ban”, Hawkins did not have a contract with any large record company, which made him free to produce records for all sorts of minor labels. In this way, 1944 turned out to be a very productive year for this famous tenor saxophone player.

Art Tatum Trio. In the first episode of this new programme featuring recordings of small swing groups, the focus is on pianist Art Tatum’s trio, which he formed in 1943. His choice for guitar player Tiny Grimes and bass player Slam Stewart turned out to be a very good one and the combo became very successful. In 1944 a large number of records were made, a selection of which can be heard in this programme.
