Trumpet player Booker Little became known in the 50s and was soon seen as Clifford Brown’s successor. But unfortunately he died far too soon (1961) at age 23. Thankfully he was very active in his final years, with reed player Eric Dolphy and others.

Baritone saxophone player Cecil Payne (1922-2007). He originally played alto saxophone, but trumpet player Dizzy Gillespie persuaded him to turn to baritone, which fit Dizzy’s infamous bebop bigband better, in the late 40s. The leader himself provided the instrument, and Payne would play it for the rest of his life.

Tenor saxophone player Ralph Moore (1956) was born in London but moved to the US in 1972. Between 1981 and 1985 he played with piano player Horace Silver and other celebrities. In 1985 his first album as leader was released on which he demonstrated a restrained accurate style with intelligently processed Coltrane influences.

Portraits: Both Duke Ellington’s and Stan Kenton’s orchestras had pieces in its repertoire that were dedicated to a particular soloist, such as trumpet players Cat Anderson or Maynard Ferguson. It’s interesting to see what kind of differences came from this.
