Buddy De Franco (1923-2014). The virtuosic clarinet player recently died at the age of 91. He performed several times in the Netherlands. One of his rare recordings is an LP together with drummer Art Blakey, where he plays the bass clarinet. Also in that role De Franco lived up to his fame.

The German multi-instrumentalist Gunter Hampel (1937) part 8. Recordings from 1978-1980 with singer Jeanne Lee, clarinet player Perry Robinson and saxophone player Mark Whitecage.

The American singer Deborah Brown (1927). When she was twenty years old she started her career and she became well-known with her performances at festivals and in jazz clubs. As of 1985 she stayed in Europe for ten years. In 1991 she toured with the trio of piano player Horace Parlan. Her album was released after the tour, recorded in a Dutch studio in a town called Monster.

Saxophone player David “Fathead” Newman (1933-2009). He started off working mainly with ‘rhythm & blues’ bands. As of 1954, he was part of Ray Charles’ accompaniment orchestra for 12 years. In 1960 and 1961 he recorded some jazz albums for Riverside and Atlantic. In this hour you can hear a selection of those recordings.
