The trombone is the centre point (part 7) with German trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff (1928-2005). Trio recordings in various compositions from 1975, 1976 and 1980.

The American saxophone player Archie Shepp (1937) counts as one of the most important representatives of ‘free jazz’ as it was developed in the sixties. His quartet with trombone player Roswell Rudd (1935) is a prime example hereof. Live recordings in San Francisco from 1966.

Cornetist Rex Stewart (1907-1970). At the end of the 1950s he formed the Fletcher Henderson Reunion Band. In 1957 he recorded an album with trumpetist Cootie Williams. In 1958 a new album followed with 2 different formations. Recordings from these 3 productions.

The American pianist and composer Muhal Richard Abrams (1930), part 9. He’s mainly active in Chicago and founder of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). Recordings from 1989-1991 in various compositions.

Mildred Bailey (1907-1951) started as a vaudeville singer before she joined Paul Whiteman’s orchestra and she would develop into one of the best jazz singers of that time. In the 1930s she often performed on the radio and she married xylophone player Red Norvo, in whose orchestra she would also sing frequently. In addition to this she sang in other swing formations with famous soloists like pianist Teddy Wilson.
