The trombone is at the centre, part 9. Today the focus is on American trombonist Ray Anderson (1952). He is an important innovator of the modern performances on this instrument with a fantastic technique and power of expression, in which the tradition still can be recognized. Recordings are of various line-ups, from the years 1985, 1989 and 1993.

Percussionist Michael Spiro and trombonist Wayne Wallace brought an old Cuban tradition back to life with their Orquestra Sinfonietta. On the album Canto America the strings play an important role – in this hour, we go far back in time.

The American tenor saxophone player Frank Lowe (1943-2003), part 1. He belonged to the second generation ‘free jazz’ musicians, with as source of inspiration Ornette Coleman. His sound can be recognized: sharp and metallic, because he had rubbed off the varnish of his instrument. Recordings from various compositions from 1971-1973.

Pianist Franco D’Andrea, one of the most famous Italian jazz masters. He shared the stage with the most adventurous Dutch drummer Han Bennink. Already in the sixties they competed in the top and played, independent of each other, with among others Johnny Griffin and Steve Lacy. Now they perform with clarinettist Daniële D’Agaro and trombonist Mauro Ottolini. Recordings from the Amsterdam Bimhuis.

Alto saxophone player and singer Eddie ‘Cleanhead’ Vinson (1917-1988). As saxophone player he remained rather undervalued, but in the forties he made it as a singer. By doing performances on festivals, he again caught attention from a larger public from 1969.

Pianist, arranger and composer Duke Pearson (1932-1980) started as a trumpet player but changed to piano because of dental problems. In 1961 his first album came out under his own name. After that, more albums came out for the label Blue Note.

A pair: piano player Guus Janssen (1951) and reed player David Kweksilber (1973). Both Dutchmen are active in a lot of areas, and their ensemble as kindred souls brings out the best in them. Recordings from 2003 up to 2006.

Horst Winter (1914-2001), Austrian clarinettist and bandleader. He grew up in Germany, but he settled in Austria after the war. There he kept an American style dance band at the top. Recordings are from 1939-1957.
